Greek authorities continue rescue operations after a wooden dinghy capsized off the southern coast of Crete. The incident occurred 12.5 nautical miles southwest of Gavdos. Coastal vessels, two coast guard vessels, and helicopters from the Air Force and navy were deployed to the scene.
Public broadcaster ERT reported one person confirmed dead, with 39 survivors transported to Paleochora in Kandanos-Selinos municipality. Reports suggest approximately 80 people were aboard the dinghy when it capsized.
Survivor Airlifted Amid Rough Conditions
A man showing symptoms of drowning was evacuated by helicopter at dawn and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Chania Hospital. Winds reaching five on the Beaufort scale complicated the rescue efforts in the area.
Authorities are working to locate dozens still missing as the search operation continues.
