A hacking group called NoName057(16) claimed responsibility for a series of cyberattacks that hit several websites across the United Kingdom. The group launched distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks between May 2 and May 4, aiming at local councils, police-related associations, and public services.
In social media posts on X, the pro-Russian group said they were punishing the UK for supporting Ukraine. “We are disconnecting its resources,” they wrote.
What Happened in the Cyberattacks?
The group targeted public websites belonging to local authorities such as Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council and Exeter City Council. They also went after the Association for Police and Crime Commissioners and other civic portals.
Despite the group’s strong words, most of the websites continued to work without problems. Spokespeople from both Blackburn and Exeter confirmed there was no disruption.
Some websites, like Arun District Council’s, did go offline for a short time. However, services were restored within a few hours.
The UK’s National Highways agency also reported a DDoS attack but said there were no lasting issues.
Many of the other targeted organizations, including Cardiff City Council and Harwich International Port, have not released any public comments.
What Is a DDoS Attack?
A DDoS attack works by flooding a website with too many visits at once. This can slow down the site or take it offline. These attacks do not steal data but can stop users from accessing services.
The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) explained that DDoS attacks are not highly advanced but can still be a big problem. The agency said it is helping affected organizations with advice and support.
Who Are NoName057(16)?
The hacking group behind the attacks is called NoName057(16). They have been active since early 2022. Their main targets are countries that support Ukraine in the ongoing war with Russia.
This is not their first attack on UK websites. In October 2023, they tried to take down similar public service websites. Like this time, the damage was limited to short outages.
In January 2023, they launched attacks in the Czech Republic. Their targets included the websites of presidential candidates during the national election.
The group uses Telegram and other platforms to share updates and rally support.
Cyber Threats Are on the Rise in the UK
These new attacks are part of a larger problem. Cybersecurity firm Bridewell reported in 2023 that 63% of UK government organizations had been hit by ransomware in just one year.
Ransomware is a type of attack where hackers lock up computer systems and demand payment to release them. It can cause major damage and cost millions in repairs.
In January, the National Audit Office also warned that the UK faces growing threats from cyberattacks. It urged public services to improve their defenses quickly.
UK Retailers Also Under Attack
While the DDoS attacks were happening, cybercriminals were also targeting major UK retailers.
Companies like Marks & Spencer, Co-op, and Harrods reported security problems. The attackers pretended to be IT staff. They tricked workers into giving access to internal systems.
The NCSC has not yet said if these retail attacks are connected to the ones on councils. But it is closely watching the situation and offering support.
The Role of NCSC in the UK’s Cyber Defense
The NCSC is part of the UK government and helps protect against cyber threats. It works with councils, police, health services, and private companies.
When attacks like these happen, the agency steps in with advice and technical help. They also share alerts and tips on how to stay safe online.
The agency encourages organizations to use two-factor authentication, update their systems, and back up important data often.
Cyber Risks Still Growing
Although the latest wave of DDoS attacks did not cause major harm, experts say the risks are rising. Groups like NoName057(16) are using simple but noisy tactics to get attention.
As online services grow more important in everyday life, keeping them safe is critical. The UK must continue to invest in strong digital defenses.
The public is also encouraged to stay alert and report suspicious activity. Cyber safety is everyone’s job.
