Recent drone sightings across New Jersey have prompted Republican Representative Chris Smith to call for federal action. Smith described the drones as a serious threat to safety and security during a news briefing on Saturday, urging immediate intervention and transparency.
“For weeks, we have asked for the truth and actions to mitigate all threats to people and property,” Smith said. “Now, we are demanding it.”
Legislation Proposed to Tackle Drone Threats
In response to growing concerns, Smith announced he is drafting legislation to allow New Jersey state police to take down drones. This initiative comes after local sheriffs raised alarm about unidentified drones operating near sensitive areas, including military bases.
Reports of drones flying near Earle naval weapons station, home to an ammunition depot, have raised red flags. Smith criticized federal agencies for not addressing these incidents with urgency. “An ammunition depot of that caliber and these drones are hovering in close proximity to it. Are you kidding me?” he said.
Federal agencies, including the FBI, Pentagon, and Department of Homeland Security, have stated that the drones are likely “manned aircraft operating lawfully.” However, Smith questioned these claims, suggesting the drones may exhibit “major military power sophistication” and could originate from adversarial nations like Russia, China, North Korea, or Iran.
Growing Calls for Federal Accountability
The drone sightings have fueled bipartisan criticism of the Biden administration’s response. New York Governor Kathy Hochul also voiced frustration, stating the situation has “gone too far.”
Smith revealed he had reached out to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, requesting authorization to use force against drones perceived as threats. He also cited allegations from the US Coast Guard of drones closely following a rescue boat. Smith argued for capturing a drone to uncover its origin and intentions.
In response to the sightings, the Federal Aviation Administration has imposed no-fly zones in parts of New Jersey. However, many officials believe broader restrictions and more aggressive actions are necessary.
