A powerful Arctic air mass will bring freezing temperatures and heavy snow to much of the central and eastern U.S. Millions will face frigid conditions and lake-effect snow during one of the year’s busiest travel times.
Dangerously Cold Air and Wind Chills
The cold air will hit the northern Plains and upper Midwest first, with highs in the single digits. The National Weather Service warned of “dangerously cold wind chills,” already impacting areas with lake-effect snow.
By Saturday, temperatures will plunge near freezing in Texas and Florida. Around 196 million Americans will wake up to below-freezing temperatures. The Interstate 95 corridor will experience its coldest start to winter in years.
In North Dakota and Alaska, wind chills could drop to -30°F, potentially causing frostbite in 10 minutes.
Heavy Snow and Travel Hazards
Western New York is preparing for up to six feet of snow by early next week. Pennsylvania has declared a snow emergency, restricting speeds and parking in Erie. Heavy snow is also expected across the Great Lakes, with rates reaching 5 inches per hour in some areas.
Snow-covered roads have already caused icy conditions. Michigan police urged drivers to increase following distances and carry emergency kits. Airlines are deicing planes to ensure safe travel, though no major flight delays have been reported.
Freeze Warnings in the South
Freeze warnings will affect Texas, Florida, and the Carolinas, with temperatures dipping into the low 30s. Officials advised protecting vulnerable people, plants, and pipes.
Rain and thunderstorms will also sweep across Florida and the Gulf Coast, accompanied by colder temperatures as Arctic air moves in.
Forecasters predict hazardous conditions through the weekend, urging travelers to prepare for delays and difficult driving.
