Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced her resignation as president of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group on Sunday. The move signals a shift in focus for Meloni as she consolidates her government’s stability.
Announcement at Party Youth Festival
Meloni made the announcement during a speech at her Brothers of Italy party’s annual youth festival in Rome. The event was attended by over 300 guests, including opposition party members and Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati.
In her speech, Meloni highlighted that political stability is essential for enhancing Italy’s credibility both domestically and internationally. She expressed confidence that her government, in office for two years, would serve its full term.
Support for New ECR Leadership
Meloni announced that her party would now support Mateusz Morawiecki of Poland as the new president of the ECR group. Her decision to step down allows her to focus on national governance while continuing to shape European conservative policies through alliances.
Lebanon Praises Italy’s Peacekeeping Role
During the festival, Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati praised Italy’s role in the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon, vital for maintaining the ceasefire in the region. Mikati emphasized the importance of adhering to the truce terms for long-term regional stability.
He also addressed the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis, stressing the EU’s role in supporting the safe return of refugees to their homeland following the downfall of Syria’s Assad regime.
Meloni’s resignation marks a strategic shift but reflects her commitment to maintaining Italy’s political stability and international influence.
