The White House has clarified that the mysterious drones observed over New Jersey in late 2024 were authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). These drones, used for research and recreational purposes, did not pose any threat to national security.
Recreational and Research Drones
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed concerns about the drone sightings during her first formal press briefing. She explained that many drones spotted over New Jersey were flown recreationally by hobbyists. Additionally, the FAA approved some drones for legitimate research purposes. “This was not the enemy,” Leavitt emphasized, noting that public curiosity and speculation had amplified the issue.
Trump’s Initial Concerns
Before assuming office, President Donald Trump urged citizens to “shoot down” unidentified drones unless the government provided clarity. Without presenting evidence, Trump accused former President Joe Biden of withholding crucial information about the drone sightings.
Biden Administration’s Earlier Assessment
The Trump administration’s conclusion aligns with an earlier statement from the Biden administration. In December, former Biden White House spokesperson John Kirby explained that the reported drones included lawful commercial and recreational aircraft, law enforcement drones, and even stars misidentified as drones. Kirby stressed that no anomalies or risks to national security or public safety were detected in civilian airspace.
Both administrations agree that the drones over New Jersey were neither a threat nor a mystery. Instead, they were part of routine, authorized activities involving research, recreation, and law enforcement.
