Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz had an intense romance in 1989 with Jenna Wang, the daughter of a Chinese Communist Party official, during his time teaching in Foshan, Guangdong Province, China. According to Wang, now 59, the relationship grew so intense that she was devastated and considered suicide after their unexpected breakup.
In a recent interview with The Post, Wang described how she had hoped the passionate affair would lead to marriage, only to be blindsided when Walz broke things off, leaving her feeling deeply hurt and humiliated. Wang explained that Walz had hinted at marriage, even sending her letters after returning to the U.S. and requesting a photo for a visa, which she interpreted as a sign he intended to bring her to America.
“I thought he also loved me, as I loved him,” Wang said. She ultimately left China for Italy, moving on from the painful end to their relationship.
Open letter revealing new infos
In an open letter, Wang detailed how close the two had been, spending time together in secret, away from her father’s watchful eye. Walz, then working with the nonprofit WorldTeach, showered Wang with gifts like gold jewelry and high-waisted jeans, and the couple shared many outings, including karaoke nights. But over time, she claims, Walz’s behavior changed, leaving her feeling deceived. She also wrote that he suggested her feelings might have been motivated by a desire to obtain a visa—a comment she described as a “shock” given she had been prepared to leave her life in China for him.
“I was ready to give up my whole life to be with Tim,” she told the Daily Mail, adding that the rejection left her feeling “cheap and common.”
Walz returned to China briefly in 1993 to lead a student program but never reconnected with Wang. In 1994, he married his wife, Gwen Whipple, on June 4, the anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, a date Whipple reportedly said they chose so it would be easy to remember.
Reflecting on Walz’s character, Wang now questions his integrity. “Tim lied about Tiananmen Square and he’s lied about other things,” she told the Daily Mail, adding that she believes he lacks the character necessary for public office.
