The Biden administration has informed Congress of a proposed $8 billion arms sale to Israel. This package includes munitions for fighter jets, attack helicopters, artillery shells, small-diameter bombs, and warheads, as reported by Axios. Approval from the House of Representatives and Senate committees is necessary for the deal to proceed.
Ongoing Support for Israel
The United States remains steadfast in its support of Israel, citing defense against Iran-backed militant groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. In August, the U.S. approved a $20 billion arms sale to Israel, including fighter jets and military equipment. Despite widespread calls for an arms embargo, U.S. policy has largely remained unchanged.
Humanitarian Crisis and Global Criticism
The Israeli assault on Gaza has displaced nearly 2.3 million residents, causing severe food shortages and genocide accusations, which Israel denies. The Gaza health ministry reports over 45,000 deaths, with many more feared trapped under rubble. Efforts to end the 15-month-long conflict have stalled, despite international condemnation and accusations of disproportionate force by Israel.
The conflict intensified following an October 7, 2023, attack by Hamas militants that killed 1,200 Israelis and resulted in 250 hostages, according to Israeli tallies. The U.S., a key ally and arms supplier to Israel, has previously vetoed U.N. Security Council ceasefire resolutions.
Transition in Leadership
As President Biden approaches the end of his term on January 20, his administration continues to prioritize strong ties with Israel. His successor, Republican President-elect Donald Trump, is also a staunch supporter of the U.S.-Israel alliance.
