On Tuesday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk made a surprise visit to Lviv, where he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Tusk reaffirmed Poland’s unwavering support for Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression.
“Even complicated histories unite nations,” Tusk said. “Moments like these show that we trust one another and can stand strong together.”
Poland’s Agenda: Paving Ukraine’s Path to Europe
With Poland set to assume the EU Council presidency in January, Tusk emphasized his country’s determination to accelerate Ukraine’s accession process to the European Union.
“We want to make this process tangible and realistic,” Tusk stated. He also reiterated Poland’s support for Ukraine’s NATO ambitions while acknowledging the challenges ahead.
In addition, Tusk announced further military aid and the opening of a new border crossing to enhance cooperation between the two nations.
Gratitude and Vision: Zelenskyy Praises Polish Support
Zelenskyy expressed deep gratitude for Poland’s consistent assistance since the beginning of the war. He emphasized the crucial role Poland plays in Europe’s security architecture.
“Poland understands that we need stable and clear security guarantees,” Zelenskyy said. “Your commitment to our NATO integration is invaluable to us.”
Beyond Short-Term Solutions: A Path to Lasting Peace
Tusk discussed plans for peace initiatives during Poland’s EU presidency. However, Zelenskyy stressed that only a genuine and lasting peace would suffice.
“A temporary ceasefire is not enough,” Zelenskyy asserted. “Only a unified and strong approach from our partners can lead to long-term security.”
