President Trump conveyed his unwavering interest in acquiring Greenland during a tense conversation with Denmark’s prime minister.
Firm Stance on Greenland
Trump’s phone call with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen emphasized his serious intentions of purchasing Greenland. European sources described the conversation as “horrendous,” with Trump remaining firm despite Denmark’s refusal to sell. One source called it a “cold shower,” saying the Danes now see the situation as both serious and potentially dangerous.
Trump views Greenland’s acquisition as essential for bolstering U.S. national security in the Arctic, where Russia and China are increasing their influence. He has even hinted at the possibility of using military force to secure the island, a statement that has alarmed Danish officials.
Danish Reactions and Greenland’s Position
Denmark has firmly rejected the idea, stating Greenland is not for sale. The Danish government is now in “crisis mode,” according to sources familiar with the situation. “The Danes are utterly freaked out,” said one source. Meanwhile, Greenland’s leader, Múte Egede, confirmed the island’s lack of interest in becoming a U.S. territory. He did, however, express openness to discussions on cooperation with the United States.
To join the U.S., Greenlanders would first need to vote for independence from Denmark and then choose to become a U.S. territory.
Trump’s Arctic and Global Strategy
Trump’s team has reiterated his seriousness about acquiring Greenland and even revisiting the Panama Canal. The president cited Greenland’s mineral wealth and strategic Arctic location as critical for U.S. economic and national security.
A White House official stated that Trump is committed to protecting U.S. interests in the Arctic while fostering mutual prosperity with Greenland. Despite his ambitions, Denmark and Greenland remain resolute in their opposition, adding to the growing tensions.
