A proposed resolution on smoke-free environments, initially supported by most MEPs, was overwhelmingly rejected after amendments excluded novel tobacco products from stricter regulations.
The European Parliament voted 378 against, 152 in favor, and 26 abstentions. Despite joint backing from the EPP, S&D, Renew Europe, and Greens/EFA, amendments by the ECR led to the proposal’s defeat. Many EPP members supported the amendments, causing tension with initial coalition partners.
Heated Debate Over Novel Tobacco Products
The amendments differentiated regulations for e-cigarettes and heated tobacco from traditional tobacco, a shift criticized by health advocates. S&D negotiator Alessandra Moretti condemned this move, citing its failure to protect public health and vulnerable groups.
The original proposal aimed to expand smoking bans, including outdoor areas and non-nicotine products. The ECR defended vaping as a tool for quitting smoking, while Patriots for Europe argued the issue belongs to member states.
The European Council will review the proposal next week. Though non-binding, the guidelines aim to guide member states in reducing tobacco-related cancer.
