Timeline of the Standoff
The shooting began around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday when officers responded to a call about a person in crisis. Upon arrival, 46-year-old Brandon Scott Poulos opened fire on the officers, wounding seven of them before barricading himself inside an apartment.
After several hours, the standoff ended with Poulos found dead inside the building. Authorities are still investigating whether his death was self-inflicted or the result of police action.
The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) praised the courage of the injured officers, stating, “Their commitment to protecting our community is a testament to their bravery and sacrifice.”
Suspect’s Background and Legal Issues
Poulos, a former Navy serviceman, had a history of legal trouble. Days before the incident, he was arrested three times on charges that included assault and driving while intoxicated.
According to reports, Poulos attacked two elderly individuals and a 44-year-old woman during a domestic altercation. He allegedly dragged the woman by her hair and struck an 83-year-old man who intervened. Poulos fled but was later arrested after crashing his car near the scene.
He was charged with multiple offenses, including assault causing injury to elderly individuals and driving under the influence. Despite the charges, Poulos was released on bond with restrictions such as avoiding contact with the victims and undergoing a mental health evaluation.
Military Service and Decorations
Poulos served in the U.S. Navy for 10 years, leaving in 2008. He was stationed in New Jersey, California, and Illinois during his service. He received several commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
Recovery and Support for Injured Officers
Six of the seven injured officers have returned home to recover, while the seventh remains hospitalized but is expected to recover fully.
