Putin Warns Western Troops in Ukraine Would Be ‘Legitimate Targets’

    Moscow’s Warning at Economic Forum

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday that any Western troops deployed to Ukraine during the ongoing conflict would be treated as “legitimate targets.” He made the remarks at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, stressing that foreign military presence while fighting continues would be unacceptable to Moscow.

    Response to Western Security Pledges

Putin’s comments followed a Paris meeting where French President Emmanuel Macron announced that 26 countries had pledged long-term security guarantees to Ukraine. The commitments include financial aid, training, and possibly an international reassurance force once the war ends. Putin warned that foreign troops on Ukrainian soil before a ceasefire or settlement would be considered combatants.

    Escalation Risks and Reactions

Kyiv dismissed the statement as intimidation aimed at weakening Western support. France and other allies said their pledges were defensive and in line with international law. Western officials continue to rule out sending combat forces to Ukraine, focusing instead on weapons, training outside the country, and financial backing. Analysts warn, however, that such rhetoric highlights the risks of escalation if foreign troops were ever deployed.
