Revolutionary Tech to Detect Impaired Drivers
AI cameras are now targeting drink and drug-drivers in Devon and Cornwall in a groundbreaking world-first trial.
The Heads-Up camera identifies driving behaviors linked to alcohol or drug impairment. Police further down the road then stop drivers for roadside testing.
Geoff Collins, UK general manager of Acusensus, praised the trial. “We’re thrilled to lead the world’s first trials of this technology in Devon and Cornwall,” he said.
The mobile camera can be deployed on any road in the counties without notice. Drivers only realize they’ve been detected when police pull them over.
“Detecting impairment early prevents incidents that could ruin lives,” added Mr. Collins, emphasizing the camera’s life-saving potential.
Boosting Road Safety and Law Enforcement
Acusensus cameras have previously caught drivers using phones or not wearing seatbelts. The new system targets drink-driving offenders.
Drink-drivers are six times more likely to cause fatal crashes. Devon & Cornwall Police hope the system will reduce such incidents.
Superintendent Simon Jenkinson highlighted the importance of the initiative. “Our officers can’t be everywhere,” he said. His team oversees 14,000 miles of roads in the two counties.
“As members of Vision Zero South West, we’re committed to reducing deaths and serious injuries on our roads,” he stated. “Adopting emerging technologies like these cameras is vital in that mission.”
The trial runs throughout December alongside other drink-driving campaigns. Authorities aim to measure its impact on road safety and incident prevention.
