Montenegrin President Jakov Milatović expressed support for Ukraine’s NATO aspirations, emphasizing that each nation has the right to choose its future. He believes Ukraine’s NATO membership will be a key topic of discussion among alliance members.
Support for Ukraine’s NATO Bid, But No Immediate Invite
In an interview with Euronews, Milatović affirmed Montenegro’s backing for Ukraine’s NATO membership but stopped short of endorsing an immediate invitation. He avoided linking membership directly to the outcome of peace negotiations with Russia.
“We supported NATO’s decision last year to strengthen relations with Ukraine. We also launched a NATO support mechanism for Ukraine,” Milatović explained. “These are crucial steps toward achieving a just peace in Ukraine, which is our ultimate goal.”
NATO’s Commitment and Kyiv’s Stance
In June, NATO allies declared that Ukraine is on an “irreversible path” to membership and pledged military aid, including F-16 fighter jets and enhanced interoperability plans. However, Ukraine insists that a ceasefire and an end to the war require NATO protection of its unoccupied territories.
While some countries argue Ukraine’s military needs further reforms to meet NATO standards, others fear that fast-tracking Ukraine’s membership could escalate tensions with Russia.
NATO Summit Discussions Ahead
Milatović expects Ukraine’s NATO membership to be a central topic at upcoming alliance meetings, particularly at the next summit in The Hague. “This will definitely be part of the important discussions among current NATO members,” he noted.
As the war in Ukraine continues, debates around security guarantees and NATO expansion remain crucial for future peace and stability in Europe.
