Body of Missing Soldier Found; Investigation Underway
The body of U.S. Army Sgt. Sarah Roque, 23, was found in a dumpster at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, officials confirmed. Authorities are treating her death as a homicide and have arrested a person of interest, though details about the suspect remain undisclosed. The Army Criminal Investigation Division has not clarified if the individual is a civilian or military member.
Roque, a bridge crewmember and mine dog handler in the Fifth Engineer Battalion, was reported missing on Monday after failing to report for duty. She enlisted in 2020 and completed her Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood. Originally from Ligonier, Indiana, Roque was awarded the Army Commendation Medal and other honors for her service.
Community Shaken by Tragic Loss
Maj. Gen. Christopher Beck called Roque’s death “a tragic loss,” emphasizing its impact on the Fort Leonard Wood community. Her body was discovered near base housing, a development that has deeply unsettled those stationed at the base.
In a statement, Fort Leonard Wood extended condolences to Roque’s family, friends, and fellow soldiers. “Sgt. Roque served bravely and honorably. Her loss leaves a void in our team,” the statement read. Support services are being offered to those affected by her death.
