Mikaela Shiffrin will not compete in the giant slalom at the 2025 Ski World Championships in Saalbach-Hinterglemm. She made the decision due to mental struggles after a bad crash. Instead, she will join the team event with downhill champion Breezy Johnson.
Fear After a Crash in Killington
Shiffrin suffered a serious fall in Killington that required surgery. Since then, she has struggled with fear and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
“I worked hard to get ready for giant slalom,” Shiffrin said on Instagram. “But I realized I am still afraid. It was heartbreaking because I loved this event two months ago.”
Due to these struggles, she changed her plans. Now, she will focus on the team event instead.
Shiffrin Teams Up with Breezy Johnson
Shiffrin will compete with Breezy Johnson in the team event. Johnson recently won the downhill world title.
“We have a long history,” Shiffrin said. “I am grateful to race with her.”
Johnson’s past doping ban makes her a controversial choice. She served a 14-month suspension, but it ended in time for the World Championships.
Lindsey Vonn Left Out
Lindsey Vonn hoped to race with Shiffrin in the team event. But Shiffrin first said no, then changed her mind. Now, Vonn will not compete.
She has not commented on the change, but many wonder if there is tension.
German Speed Team Struggles
The German speed team, led by Romed Baumann, is under pressure. Their poor performance has led to criticism.
“Really poor,” their head coach said. “We must do better.”
Now, all eyes are on Shiffrin and Johnson as they aim for gold.
