Oscar Piastri took the win at the Chinese Grand Prix in dominant fashion. He led McLaren to a strong one-two finish, with teammate Lando Norris in second place. However, the victory was marred by major penalties for Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, who were both disqualified after the race for technical violations.
McLaren’s Strong Performance
Piastri started the race from pole position and controlled it from the beginning. He was never under threat and led the race from start to finish. Norris, who started in third place, quickly moved up and passed George Russell to take second. This helped McLaren secure their 50th one-two finish in Formula 1.
Mercedes’ George Russell finished in third place, while Max Verstappen of Red Bull crossed the line in fourth. However, the race’s most dramatic moments came after the checkered flag.
Hamilton and Leclerc Disqualified for Technical Violations
After the race, post-race checks revealed problems with the cars of Lewis Hamilton and Leclerc. Hamilton’s skid blocks were found to be too thin, violating the technical rules. Leclerc and Pierre Gasly from Alpine were also disqualified for having underweight cars.
Skid blocks are important because they help ensure cars stay at a safe height off the ground. These checks are done to make sure every car is safe and that all teams compete fairly. Ferrari has yet to comment on the penalties.
As a result, Esteban Ocon from Alpine was moved up to fifth, and Kimi Antonelli took sixth.
Piastri Leads McLaren’s Charge
The race itself was mostly free of drama. Piastri held his lead, and Norris moved into second place by passing Russell early in the race. Ferrari’s hopes were dashed early when Leclerc lightly clipped Hamilton’s front wing on the first lap. This caused damage to Hamilton’s car, but both Ferraris stayed in the race, although they could not challenge the leaders.
Pit stops began early. Most drivers changed to hard tyres around lap 15. Norris lost second place to Russell after a quick pit stop, but he regained the position with a clean pass two laps later.
McLaren’s drivers stayed calm and in control throughout the race. They managed their tyre wear well and kept a steady pace. Late in the race, Norris had brake pedal problems but was able to nurse the car home for second place. Verstappen passed Leclerc for fourth on lap 53, but Leclerc was later disqualified.
FIA’s Decision Changes Race Results
Piastri’s victory marked his third career win and his first in China. McLaren’s performance signals that they are a strong contender for the championship this season. After the race, the FIA confirmed that Hamilton, Leclerc, and Gasly had violated technical rules. This caused major changes to the final results.
One notable performance came from rookie Ollie Bearman. He finished in seventh for Haas, a solid drive for the young driver. Alex Albon finished eighth for Williams, Lance Stroll was ninth for Aston Martin, and Carlos Sainz was tenth, also in a Williams.
