Kyiv Endures Heavy Damage from Russian Drone Attack
Kyiv faced significant destruction as debris from intercepted Russian drones scattered across multiple districts after a prolonged air raid. The raid, lasting over five hours, targeted the capital on Saturday night. Ukrainian air force officials reported that Russia launched 71 Shahed drones, of which 39 were intercepted. However, despite GPS jamming technology redirecting some drones, substantial wreckage still impacted Kyiv.
Impact on Infrastructure and Residential Areas
A 16-story residential and office building was among the most severely affected locations. Debris from the drones damaged the upper floors and ignited a fire. The attack also disrupted a high-voltage power line, temporarily cutting power. Ukrainian energy provider DTEK worked swiftly to restore electricity to most areas.
The widespread damage highlighted the intensity of the assault. This marked one of the most prolonged air raids on Kyiv in recent months, leaving citizens and authorities grappling with its aftermath.
Broader Context of Russian Attacks
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the use of Shahed drones in these relentless attacks, which occur “almost every night.” Other Ukrainian regions, including Poltava, Sumy, and Kharkiv, also experienced strikes during the offensive.
Oleksandr Syrskyi, Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine’s Armed Forces, emphasized the importance of consistent international support. He noted that Ukraine faces one of Russia’s most aggressive offensives since the war began, requiring sustained aid to bolster its defenses and resilience.
The latest attacks underline the continuing threat to Ukrainian sovereignty and the resilience required to withstand ongoing aggression.
