A Procession Through Plains and Lying in State in Atlanta
Memorial services for former US President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at 100, have started in Georgia. On Saturday, Carter’s flag-draped casket traveled through his hometown of Plains, where residents lined the streets to honor him. Afterward, the procession continued to Atlanta, where his casket will remain until Tuesday for the public to pay their respects.
Mourners in Plains highlighted Carter’s humility and strong connection to the community. “He lived as an ordinary man and never sought the limelight,” said William Brown, 71. Many attendees waved flags or saluted as the motorcade passed by. The procession paused at Carter’s childhood peanut farm, where a bell rang 39 times to honor his service as the 39th President.
Tributes and the Upcoming State Funeral
At a ceremony held at the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta, Carter’s grandson Jason spoke movingly about his grandfather’s legacy. “This week, we celebrate an extraordinary life, one that was both impactful and fulfilling,” Jason said. Reflecting on Carter’s 100 years, he remarked, “It’s amazing how much one can accomplish in a century.”
Residents of Atlanta can visit the center until Tuesday to pay their final respects. Following this, Carter’s casket will journey to Washington, D.C., where it will lie in state at the Capitol Rotunda. On Thursday, the nation will bid farewell with a state funeral at the National Cathedral. President Joe Biden will deliver the eulogy, and all living former US Presidents—Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump—are expected to attend. Biden has also declared Thursday a national day of mourning, ensuring that all federal offices will close to honor Carter.
Trump Questions Flag at Half-Staff Protocol
The traditional 30-day period of half-staff flags for deceased Presidents has sparked criticism from Donald Trump. He expressed frustration that flags would still remain at half-staff during his potential second inauguration on January 20. “No one wants this, and no American would be happy about it,” Trump commented on Truth Social.
Final Farewell in Georgia
After the state funeral in Washington, Carter’s casket will return to Georgia. He will be laid to rest beside his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in 2023. Carter died peacefully on December 29, surrounded by family in his Plains home, just three months after celebrating his 100th birthday.
Jimmy Carter served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. The Nobel Peace Prize recognized his humanitarian contributions in 2002. He leaves behind a legacy of peace, humility, and service that continues to inspire millions.
