At the latest Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting in Ramstein, Germany, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced new military aid for Ukraine and reassured that Germany’s support would remain steadfast, irrespective of the country’s upcoming federal elections. The meeting underscored Germany’s commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defence against ongoing Russian aggression.
Additional Tanks and Air Defence Systems for Ukraine
Boris Pistorius emphasized Germany’s unwavering dedication to Ukraine during a press conference following the meeting. He stated:
“Ukraine can rely on Germany, no matter the outcome of the federal elections on February 23.”
Germany pledged additional military aid, including three more IRIS-T SLM and SLS air defence systems and 13 Gepard tanks. Furthermore, Pistorius announced plans to deliver extra IRIS-T missiles, originally allocated for the Bundeswehr, to Ukraine in the near future. These systems are crucial for Ukraine’s defence against aerial threats and mark Germany’s strategic focus on enhancing Ukraine’s air defence capabilities.
Germany’s contributions extend beyond Ukraine. In a significant move to secure NATO’s eastern flank, two Patriot missile units and 200 Bundeswehr soldiers will be deployed to Poland. These forces will operate under NATO for six months, reinforcing the alliance’s regional stability and readiness. This deployment highlights Germany’s role as a pivotal player in Europe’s collective defence efforts.
Uncertainty Surrounding US Policy on Ukraine
The meeting also highlighted concerns about potential shifts in U.S. policy with Donald Trump’s imminent return to the presidency. Pistorius stressed the importance of continuing the Ukraine Defence Contact Group meetings in Ramstein but acknowledged that the initiative’s future hinges on U.S. participation. He stated:
“If the Trump administration decides to discontinue the format, we must explore alternative mechanisms to ensure continued cooperation.”
