The European Union is making a bold move. With IRIS², Europe’s new satellite project, secure communication will be significantly enhanced.
“This is a milestone,” said Andrius Kubilius, the EU’s Defence and Space Commissioner. “For the first time, our space program directly supports the defense needs of EU member states.” In times of crisis, independent communication is crucial.
IRIS²: Strengthening Europe’s Resilience
The agreement includes the launch of 290 satellites, starting in 2029. By 2030, the system will be fully operational. Josef Aschbacher, ESA Director General, explained: “IRIS² will improve Europe’s resilience and competitiveness.” Communication will remain stable, even in hostile environments.
The total cost amounts to €11 billion. The EU will contribute €6 billion, private investors €4.1 billion, and the ESA will cover the rest.
Global Coverage with Multi-Orbit Capability
An EU official highlighted: “IRIS² integrates satellites across multiple orbits.” 264 satellites will operate at 1,200 kilometers, 18 at mid-orbit, and 10 at lower altitudes. This structure ensures worldwide connectivity.
Data will be collected at ground stations in France, Italy, and Luxembourg. Countries like Japan and Australia have already expressed interest in accessing these services.
“We must become less dependent,” Kubilius emphasized. “IRIS² secures Europe’s future and strengthens our position globally.”
