The European Union has ramped up its investigation into X, requesting internal documents on the platform’s “recommender system” to assess its content moderation practices. The probe aims to determine whether X’s algorithms amplify far-right content, potentially influencing political discourse.
Focus on Content Moderation Practices
The EU requested internal documents about X’s algorithms, specifically its “recommender system,” by 15 February. Investigators aim to assess whether X’s algorithms give far-right content greater visibility while suppressing alternative viewpoints.
This probe falls under the Digital Services Act (DSA), which governs content moderation and the spread of illegal information online. X faces accusations of manipulating its systems to influence political narratives, raising concerns about its role in European politics.
EU Warns of Penalties for Non-Compliance
Henna Virkkunen, EU digital commissioner, stated that the commission will enforce compliance with the DSA to protect democratic principles. She confirmed the EU’s willingness to impose penalties or bans if X breaches its legal obligations.
To ensure transparency, the EU issued a retention order. This requires X to preserve internal records about algorithm changes until the investigation concludes. The commission also requested access to X’s commercial interfaces to analyze external data handling.
Allegations of Political Influence
The investigation follows accusations of Musk influencing European elections by promoting far-right views and engaging with controversial political figures. The EU is examining whether X’s algorithms amplify certain narratives while suppressing dissent, jeopardizing fair elections.
Musk dismissed the criticism, calling it an attack on democracy and free speech. The EU, however, emphasized the need for algorithmic accountability to protect fair democratic processes.
This case underscores the growing tension between free expression and the regulation of powerful tech platforms.
