Humanitarian Crisis Deepens in Sudan, as an MSF ambulance attack in North Darfur leaving one dead. The ongoing conflict has displaced over 12 million people, while drone strikes on critical infrastructure like the Merowe Dam further exacerbate the dire situation. Aid groups are calling for urgent action to protect civilians and ensure humanitarian access.
Ambulance Attack Leaves One Dead
An ambulance operated by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) was attacked in North Darfur while transporting a pregnant woman needing urgent surgery. The vehicle, clearly marked with MSF’s logo and flag, came under fire during the transfer to Saudi Hospital in Al-Fashir.
The ambulance carried the patient, two caregivers, the driver, and medical personnel. One caregiver was fatally injured in the attack. The assailant remains unidentified. MSF’s emergency coordinator, Michel Olivier Lacharité, condemned the violence and called for better protection for medical teams and humanitarian workers.
Violence Drives Mass Displacement
Since April 2023, Sudan has faced violent clashes between the Sudanese army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF militia, commanded by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. The ongoing conflict has displaced over 12 million people, with many fleeing their homes to seek refuge elsewhere in Sudan or neighboring countries. The violence has severely disrupted humanitarian efforts, compounding the suffering of civilians.
Energy Crisis from Drone Strikes
The Merowe Dam, a critical power source for Port Sudan and surrounding areas, suffered significant damage from drone strikes. The Sudanese army accused the RSF militia of carrying out the attacks, which set parts of the dam’s electrical systems ablaze. The resulting blackouts have impacted Port Sudan, the hub for the Sudanese government and UN operations during the conflict.
Call for Urgent Action
International organizations and aid groups are calling for an immediate cessation of violence and increased protection for humanitarian operations. Ensuring the safety of civilians and repairing critical infrastructure are vital steps toward addressing the crisis. A peaceful resolution is crucial to reduce suffering and restore stability in Sudan.
