President-elect Donald Trump announced Kash Patel as his choice for FBI director on Saturday. Patel will replace Christopher Wray if Trump takes office in January.
Patel, a former federal prosecutor and Trump loyalist, previously held key national security roles in Trump’s administration. “Kash is a brilliant lawyer and defender of justice,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He credited Patel with exposing the “Russia Hoax” and praised his dedication to the Constitution.
During Trump’s first term, Patel served as chief of staff at the Department of Defense and deputy director of National Intelligence. Trump commended his efforts against crime and trafficking, saying Patel would lead the FBI to tackle these issues.
The FBI responded with a statement emphasizing its ongoing mission to protect Americans from various threats. Patel declined to comment on the nomination.
Patel’s Track Record and Controversy
Patel gained prominence as an aide to Rep. Devin Nunes, challenging intelligence officials and the so-called “deep state.” Since 2021, he has supported Trump through public appearances and social media.
Patel’s views could provoke resistance in the Senate confirmation process. Trump reportedly plans to use recess appointments to bypass Senate approval if needed.
Critics argue Patel’s appointment could undermine the FBI. Legal experts, including Harry Litman, called Patel an “FBI hater” ill-suited for the role. However, Trump allies, like Michael Flynn, celebrated the move, calling Patel “America’s choice.”
If confirmed, Patel’s leadership could mark a sharp shift for the FBI under Trump’s vision.
