Israel’s PM Netanyahu Fires Defence Minister Yoav Gallant Over ‘Crisis of Trust’

by Richard Parks

In a surprising move, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on Tuesday, citing a “crisis of trust” that has strained their relationship during Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas and rising tensions in the Middle East.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz will assume Gallant’s former role as Defence Minister, while Gideon Saar, a recent addition to Netanyahu’s cabinet, will take on the role of Foreign Minister. Netanyahu explained that the partnership with Gallant initially worked well but had deteriorated in recent months. “In the midst of a war, more than ever, full trust is required between the prime minister and defence minister,” he stated, underscoring the need for cohesion in Israel’s leadership.

Throughout the prolonged Gaza conflict, Gallant had advocated for a balanced approach, suggesting that military action created a pathway for a diplomatic solution and the potential release of hostages held by Hamas. This viewpoint often conflicted with Netanyahu’s stance for stronger military pressure. Gallant’s dismissal comes amid other disputes, including his criticism of Netanyahu’s judicial reforms, which also placed him at odds with National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

Gallant responded to his dismissal by reiterating his commitment to Israel’s security, saying on social media, “The security of the State of Israel always was, and will always remain, my life’s mission.” His previous attempted removal in March of last year led to widespread protests, adding to domestic criticism of Netanyahu’s handling of recent conflicts and the hostage crisis. Gallant’s experience as a former naval commando and IDF officer has made him a significant voice within the government and a prominent figure in Israel’s defence strategy.
