The body of missing U.S. Army Sgt. Sarah Roque, 23, was discovered this week in a dumpster at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, with authorities now investigating her death as a homicide. Officials confirmed that a person of interest has been arrested, though the Army Criminal Investigation Division has yet to release details about the suspect’s identity, charges, or whether they are a civilian.

Roque was reported missing on Monday after she failed to report for duty. A bridge crewmember and mine dog handler with the K9 Detachment in the Fifth Engineer Battalion, Roque had enlisted in the Army in 2020, completing her Basic Combat Training at Fort Leonard Wood. Originally from Ligonier, Indiana, she was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and the Army Service Ribbon for her service.

“This is a tragic loss,” said Maj. Gen. Christopher Beck, commander at Fort Leonard Wood. “This is something we never want for a family or a unit to have to endure.” He shared that Roque’s body was found in a dumpster near base housing, a discovery that has shaken the community.

In a statement released Tuesday, Fort Leonard Wood expressed deep sadness over the loss, offering condolences to Roque’s family, friends, and fellow soldiers. “Sgt. Roque was a daughter, sister, friend, and soldier who served bravely and honorably,” the statement read. “Her passing has left a void in our team, and while words can’t ease the pain, we are committed to providing care and support to those affected during this difficult time.”
