Epic Games has announced Fortnite’s return to the US iPhone App Store after a four-year absence. The popular game had been removed due to a legal dispute between Epic and Apple. Fortnite is now available again on iPhones, iPads, and also on the Epic Games Store and AltStore across the European Union.
Background of the Epic vs. Apple Dispute
In 2020, Apple removed Fortnite after Epic bypassed the company’s 15–30% fee on in-app transactions. Epic responded by launching its own digital store and suing Apple. Epic claimed Apple maintained an illegal monopoly on its App Store, restricting competition.
Although a federal judge ruled in 2021 that Apple did not violate antitrust laws, the court ordered Apple to allow links to third-party payment options. Apple introduced a system to comply but still charged a 27% commission on external transactions.
Epic Challenges Apple’s Compliance
Epic argued Apple ignored the court ruling. Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers then prohibited Apple from collecting commissions on payments made outside the App Store. Despite this, Epic claimed Apple continued to block Fortnite’s return.
Last week, Epic filed a motion accusing Apple of civil contempt and sought to force Fortnite’s reinstatement. Judge Gonzalez Rogers questioned Apple’s position and scheduled a hearing for May 27. She noted Apple could solve the issue without further court involvement.
Apple Agrees to Return Fortnite
On Tuesday, Apple informed the court that it had resolved the conflict blocking Fortnite’s return. While the game remains unavailable in some countries, it is now officially back on US iOS devices.
Expert Views on the Resolution
Leo Gebbie, a digital markets analyst, said, “This marks a significant moment in app store dynamics. Allowing Fortnite back is a win for both competition and consumer choice.” He added the case could reshape how app payments and commissions operate industry-wide.
The dispute highlighted tensions over Apple’s control of its ecosystem and the challenges faced by developers in navigating app store policies.
What This Means for Users and Developers
With Fortnite’s return, iOS users regain access to the game through the official Apple platform, improving convenience and security. For Epic, the reinstatement strengthens its presence on mobile devices and supports its broader ecosystem.
Developers now watch closely how Apple’s policies adapt to legal pressures and market demands. The case sets important precedents for app store governance and fair business practices.
