Ohio Governor Considers Mehek Cooke as Replacement for JD Vance’s Senate Seat

by Rudolph Angler

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine is evaluating candidates to fill Vice President-elect JD Vance’s Senate seat, with attorney Mehek Cooke emerging as a top contender. Vance, who will assume the vice presidency next year, will vacate his Senate position, leaving DeWine to appoint a temporary replacement until a special election in 2026.

Cooke, a seasoned attorney and political strategist, served as a surrogate for Donald Trump during the 2024 presidential campaign. Known for her fundraising prowess and deep ties to Ohio, Cooke has appeared on Fox News advocating for Trump and his policies. Her legal career includes roles as assistant chief counsel in the Ohio governor’s office and as a federal prosecutor handling high-profile cases.

A mother of two and an immigrant from India, Cooke has built a reputation as a grounded and principled advocate. Prominent Ohio businessman Marty Savko described her as a “fighter” who connects with everyday citizens and champions fairness and transparency.

DeWine’s decision is influenced by the need to balance support from Trump’s base and the broader Republican establishment. While Cooke is a strong candidate, other potential replacements include Jane Timken, former Ohio Republican Party chair, and a slate of state officials and current congressional representatives.

The final decision is expected to coincide with Vance’s official departure, with DeWine emphasizing the need for a “workhorse” to earn voter trust ahead of the 2026 special election. Cooke and DeWine’s office declined to comment on the selection process.
